Most evangelicals, in my experience, either tend towards 1) siding with the Republican party on virtually every issue or 2) reacting to group #1 by neglecting politics so much as to cede any influence whatsoever in the public square. The thing I love about Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the US Bishops is their willingness to speak out, regardless of whether they offend Republicans or Democrats.
In college I did an independent study on the religious right and was fascinated to find how virtually all of the leaders became surrogates for the GOP. But not the US Bishops. They forcefully speak out against the Human Health and Services contraception mandate and support gun control at the same time. Our faith is not boxed into a political party. I love it.
